SB 1146 still threatens religious colleges in California
Thomasson: 'No one who supports religious freedom should be deceived into supporting the amended SB 1146, which sets a dangerous precedent by imposing new state control upon religious colleges. Whatever happened to the time-honored boundary between secular and sacred?'
Sacramento, California -- A nationally controversial California bill infringing on religious freedom is still bad despite its latest amendment, says a statewide California organization opposed to state control of faith-based institutions.
As reported in today's media, the amended SB 1146 would force and regulate new public disclosures for religious-based colleges. It would require religious-format colleges to post and distribute new, state-mandated disclosures on biblical policies which the state disparages as "discriminatory"; make faith-based colleges submit to new state regulators inspecting their campuses; and mandates that religious institutions report themselves to the State when a student is expelled for violating the religious campus' clearly-communicated biblical standards for conduct.
"SB 1146 was a very, very bad bill which is still a bad bill today," said Randy Thomasson, who has 22 years of California legislative experience and is president of SaveCalifornia.com, which promotes moral virtues for the common good, and which has been strongly opposing SB 1146 with paid ads reaching hundreds of thousands of concerned Californians.
"If the watered-down SB 1146 passes and imposes new mandates on Christian colleges -- including putting a target on them by reporting them to the State for any student expulsions based on these faith-based colleges' moral standards -- the Democrat author of the bill intends to next year bring back the lawsuit provision to financially harm religious colleges," Thomasson said. "An old Arabian proverb warns not to allow a camel's nose under a tent. The SB 1146 situation is even worse because the camel is fully planning to topple the tent and trample its inhabitants."
"Voting for this amended bill invites a full SB 1146 in the future," Thomasson cautioned. "If the amended SB 1146 becomes law, expect the harmful lawsuit portion to be next, followed by the even-worse bill banning Cal Grants to students at religious colleges. No one who supports religious freedom should be deceived into supporting the amended SB 1146, which sets a dangerous precedent by imposing new state control upon religious colleges. Whatever happened to the time-honored boundary between secular and sacred?"
