Gavin Newsom surprisingly vetoes pro-abortion student ID cards
Didn't trust pro-life school boards to comply
Sacramento, California (October 13, 2019) -- California Governor Gavin Newsom has vetoed the highly-controversial AB 624, which would have mandated that student identification cards of children in grades 7 to 12 at public schools and charter schools have printed on them a "telephone number for a local resource that provides sexual and reproductive health care information."
Newsom, in his veto message, wrote, "I do not support, however, burdening schools with the job of investigating local reproductive health agencies as this bill would require. There are many agencies across this state that refuse to give women information about all of their reproductive health care options, and I am not persuaded that schools have the appropriate expertise to decide which of these organizations they should direct their students to. Furthermore, I believe the time and money that would be spent on this activity would be better used improving teaching and learning as well as meeting the existing requirements of the California Healthy Youth Act."
Randy Thomasson, president of SaveCalifornia.com, a leading family issues organization promoting moral virtues for the common good, which strongly opposed AB 624, issued the following statement:
"Apparently Gavin Newsom fears that the science proving that babies are human beings from conception and that STDs are transmitted through irresponsible behavior is winning the war of medical accuracy. To get this veto because Newsom didn't want a pro-life organization's phone number on the back of some student ID cards is a surprising reversal of fortunes for parents and grandparents opposed to targeting teen and pre-teen girls to become new customers for Planned Parenthood abortionists.
"However, neither Planned Parenthood nor the pro-abortion California Teachers Association officially supported this Democrat-authored bill, demonstrating they didn't think it pushed abortion strongly enough. Will a future bill specifically require a Planned Parenthood phone number instead of AB 624's generic 'local resource that provides sexual and reproductive health care information'?
"With the veto of AB 624, California children in public schools have dodged a bullet. Yet no one should think any child in government schools is safe from the Democrat politicians' indoctrination. In fact, Newsom is openly relying upon the sexually-explicit, pro-abortion "California Healthy Youth Act" to brainwash junior high and high school children to fully embrace terminating babies in the womb, and to repeatedly hand impressionable kids flyers with the phone number to Planned Parenthood's local abortion center."
DOCUMENTATION
AB 329, chaptered in 2015, requires that, "at least once in junior high or middle school and at least once in high school," public schools and charter schools shall provide children with: "... (8) Information about local resources, how to access local resources, and pupils' legal rights to access local resources for sexual and reproductive health care ... (9) Information about the effectiveness and safety of all FDA-approved contraceptive methods in preventing pregnancy, including, but not limited to, emergency contraception. Instruction on pregnancy shall include an objective discussion of all legally available pregnancy outcomes, including, but not limited to, all of the following: (A) Parenting, adoption, and abortion ..."
